January 2022 update from EAA105

Dear chapter members,

Thank you to everyone who took advantage of the donation matching offer in December-January. Total donations were more than $22,500 (for youth scholarships and the general fund). This shows how much our members care about this EAA chapter, and its mission.

As the incoming chapter president, my first resolution is to work on chapter communication and participation. My belief is: the more you participate, the more you get out of your membership. Participation includes donating, making pancakes, flying Young Eagles, squeezing rivets, learning new skills and more. But, first you need to know about opportunities that exist in the chapter and how to join in.

We’re going to experiment with a few ideas. This broadcast is one of them. Think of it as a mini newsletter. Also, Cliff Gerber has added a breakfast volunteer sign-up on our website. It takes 28 volunteers to run each breakfast. We need volunteers, so please CLICK THIS to sign yourself up.

We’ve created a group email/forum. Everyone should have received an invitation. More than 50 chapter members have joined already. The forum can be used to have conversations among chapter members. You can ask questions, share trip reports, photos, etc. Click this to go to the EAA105-forum.

If you haven’t heard – we have a project in hangar G1. It’s a 1946 Cessna 120. It was donated by the late chapter member Terry Smith. We’d like to restore it to airworthy condition. A dedicated fund was created by chapter members to cover the cost. This is an opportunity for chapter members to learn and/or to collaborate on a restoration. It’s open to anyone interested in helping. You can follow along here: Cessna 120 photo album

We’ll be making plans for 2022 soon. The floor is open to anyone who has a suggestion. We canceled an RC build and fly program in 2020 due to COVID. It would be great to see that back on the calendar. Chapter meeting programs? Young Eagle events? Fly-in/out? Let’s make it happen.

Lastly, I’d like to acknowledge the ongoing challenge with COVID and its effects. We decided to cancel the January and the February breakfast. The omicron variant and holiday test results were a surprise. We plan to resume in March. Thanks to those of you who continue to volunteer and attend. The pancake breakfast is a valuable part of our community.

Send me an email if you’d like to know more about any of the above programs. The forum is another way to suggest or organize an event. I’m hopeful that 2022 will bring positive change.

Best regards,

Chris

November 2021 Chapter Meeting – Bird Strike Incident

EAA 105 November Meeting & 2022 Board of Directors Election Kick-Off

Thursday, November 11th
Twin Oaks Airpark
in the Breakfast Hangar

Join us for the November chapter meeting on Thursday evening at 6:30 pm. We will gather starting at about 6:30, and the presentation will begin at 7:00.  This month, the presentation will cover a cross-country flight being made in April by chapter member Greg Hughes that ended after he and the airplane experienced a bird strike. The presentation will cover the event itself, as well as after-the-fact thoughts and lessons.

The meeting will be held at Twin Oaks Airpark, 12405 SW River Rd, Hillsboro, in the big breakfast hangar/rental office hangar.

In addition, the annual election of directors for the chapter board of directors will kick off at this meeting. We will introduce the slate that has been proposed by the current board and take nominations from the floor. The election will be held electronically in the same manner as last year, to ensure all members have an opportunity to vote whether they can make the meeting this week or not.

See you there!!

NOTE: Due to current the current COVID situation, the chapter board has specified that attendees need to have been fully vaccinated and will need to wear a mask. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Project: 1946 Cessna 120

In summer 2021 the chapter began a project to restore a 1946 Cessna 120.  The airplane was donated by long-time chapter member Terry Smith. The airplane has seventy-five years of history in Oregon – more than 20 owners! The goals of the project include making the airplane airworthy, creating an opportunity for fractional ownership, and possibly organizing a flying club that would maintain and fly the airplane.  More than 7500 Cessna 120/140s were built in the 1940s.  They have a following, there’s a type club, and parts are available.  It’s a relatively simple design, inexpensive to maintain, and can provide tailwheel experience.  The airplane has been inspected by an A&P/IA and was deemed restorable. Work will take place in the EAA 105 workshop – Twin Oaks, hangar G1 until it’s completed.  We estimate 18 months.  Restoration will require rebuilding or replacing the Continental C-85-12 motor, recovering the fabric wings, and making some repairs to the airframe. The project depends on volunteer effort and/or donations.  For more information about volunteering, ownership, donating or the airplane’s history contact Chris Riedener.  Cell/text: 503-754-5605, or email: chris.j.riedener@gmail.com.  A photo logbook will be updated as we progress.
