Monthly Chapter Meeting
The November 9 (second Thursday) monthly meeting program consisted of the annual election of officers and directors, and the annual pie auction. Elected were president Rion Bourgeois, vice-president Bill Jepson, secretary Benton Holzwarth, treasurer Jenny Hickman and directors Cliff Gerber, Greg Hughes, Bruce Rose, Richard Van Grunsven, Jerry Van Grunsven, Chris Riedener, Ken Howe, Mike Whelan and Chad Koehnen. The pie auction brought in $1,345 with the help of auctioneer’s assistant Kelsey Hickman wearing her chapter president costume, including a natural looking goatee. A presentation was made of Bogardus Trophies to EAA Chapter 105 for the third most Young Eagle flights by an Oregon chapter in 2022 (118 flights, seven behind the leader), and to Cliff Gerber for the third most Young Eagle flights in 2022 by an Oregon pilot (23 flights, one behind the first and second place pilots). Cliff is also the Young Eagles coordinator for our chapter. By the way, the Bogardus Trophy program was begun in the mid 1990s by EAA Chapter 105 before George Bogardus’ death. Brent Anderson designed and built the Bogardus Trophies for the first several years of the awards, and he would fly to a chapter meeting of the winning chapter to make the presentation in person.
Build and Fly Program
The first model has been flown several times. Bill Jepson and Mike Whelan have made the chapter’s Build and Fly Program a rousing success, and the board of directors has authorized the purchase of another kit.
Oregon Air Fair
Approximately 1,300 people attended the Oregon Air Fair at Hillsboro Airport on October 28, 2023. It was a public outreach event aimed primarily at youth. Cliff Gerber, Bill Jepson, Chad Koehnen, Mike Whelen and I manned a table. I flew in my RV-4 and Dick Van Grunsven flew in the latest Teen Flight RV-12 for static displays. Cliff’s small aluminum RV RivKits were a big success. The Port of Portland was very happy with us, and has invited us back.
